Liverpool – home to top sporting action all year round

The city of Liverpool is the home to Liverpool Football Club, historically the most successful football club in the history of English football and one of the most famous football clubs in the world. Their fans are known for the electric atmosphere they create at Anfield stadium on matchdays with their soaring renditions of the popular song 'You'll Never Walk Alone'.

There is also another great club in Liverpool, Everton FC, which is one of the oldest football clubs in the UK and one of the five most successful clubs in England. Everton play at Goodison Park, which is one of the oldest football grounds in the country. The two leading football grounds hold roughly 40,000 spectators and match tickets are available to the public as well as club supporters.

Football is not the only sporting attraction in Liverpool. Horse racing is also very popular. The Aintree Racecourse to the north of the city is home to the Grand National. This steeplechase is one of the most famous horse races in the world and is one of the pinnacle events on the international horse racing calendar. It takes place early in April each year.

Apart from Aintree, there is another internationally renowned racecourse in Liverpool: Haydock Park, which offers top quality races for flat and National Hunt racing. There is public access to both race courses and there are parking facilities and ease of access via public transport. Do check dress codes before going though as a certain standard of dress can be stipulated depending on the meet.

Golfing is another a popular spectator sport in Liverpool. The Royal Liverpool Golf Club, located near the town of Hoylake on the Wirral Peninsula, is a world famous golf club, having hosted the Open Championship on a number of occasions. Other tour events on the European golf circuit are held there, such as The Walker Cup. If you fancy a quick round at this famous venue, the possibility  is available to you. There are also many other golf clubs in and around Liverpool, such as Royal Birkdale – another venue where the Open is staged – and the Aintree Golf Club, which is situated in the centre of the racecourse, making it one of the most unique locations for golfing in the UK.

Liverpool also has a great history when it comes to rugby league. It is the home to St. Helens Rugby League Club, who play at the Langtree Stadium on Peasley Cross Lane. They are the second most successful side in the Challenge Cup history, their twelve wins placing them only behind their great rivals Wigan. The rugby league season now takes place across the summer months to avoid clashing with the football season, which means the city of Liverpool has great sporting action on offer all year round.

Other sports on offer are motor racing at the Oulton Par Race Circuit, where you can enjoy the adrenalin pumping fun of seeing Super Bikes, Touring Cars and Formula Three races.

All in all Liverpool is a fantastic place to go – to watch or participate in sport.
