Discover the hidden treasures of Newcastle

If you’ve visited Newcastle you would have discovered the Metro Centre with all its fabulous shops, or taken a trip to Quayside and looked around its museums and galleries. But what if you’re looking for something a little different and unusual to do? We highlight some of the hidden treasures of Newcastle waiting to be enjoyed…

Victoria Tunnel

The waggonway was built in the nineteenth century to transport coal from the Spital Tongues (Leazes Main) Colliery to the river. The Victoria Tunnel was then converted into an air raid shelter to protect hundreds of Newcastle citizens during World War II. It is now an exiting tour that takes you on a subterranean journey through the city’s great history. The tour is run by Newcastle's Hidden Heritage: An Ouseburn Trust Project.
